1. Caterina Martorano

When I was young, Grandma Montemayor stayed with Iris, Stanley, and me while Mom and Dad went to a funeral.  It was Aunt Maggie Rafferty's funeral in Wyoming.  She was very sick with cancer.  I must of been 14 or 15 years of age.
She told me some very interesting stories.  I would like to write those down so maybe someone who is interested in the stories might have them.
One of the stories was about her father,  Vincenzo Marturano.  She told me that her father did not like the Mexicans who lived in Trinidad, Colorado where they lived.  And one Mexican man was trying to date Aunt Lucy.  Great-grandpa met the man on the porch and told him to stay away with Aunt Lucy.  The man put his foot on the porch, took out a smoke and lit it.
Great-grandpa Marturano took out his gun and shot him dead.  The court said he was protecting his property, and that the man was tresspassing.  Some day I may try to prove or disprove this story.
One of the stories was about how Grandma Montemayor managed to meet and marry Grandpa.  I asked her how she managed to marry Grandpa when her father,G-grandpa Marturano, didn't like Mexicans???  She said it was really hard.  Grandpa Montemayor would waited until she was in the field weeding the beets or corn and he would hide in the irrigation ditch next to where she was weeding and talk to her.  He talked her into running away with him to get married.  Grandma said they went to Mexico and got married and then came back to Trinidad and had a church wedding.  Again, it would be fun to prove or disprove this story.
One of her stories was about my Mother's birth.  Grandma said she went to Mexico with Grandpa for a vacation.  It was close to her due date, but she went any way.  She said they were playing in the Rio Grande when she started to have labor pains.
She went to the Mexico side of the river and Mom was born.  Grandma said they had to sneak Mom back into the U.S.  She had a high fever and some sores around her neck, but they got her back to Trinidad and she was fine.  Again it would be fun to prove or disprove.
I wish I had asked more questions.  But Grandma was in really alot of pain.
I really love this wonderful woman.  She was the kindest, most generous person I've ever known.
